A. x−2x – 2
B. x−3x – 3
C. x+2x + 2
D. Both A and B
Answer: D
 Factorization: x2−5x+6=(x−2)(x−3)x^2 – 5x +6 = (x-2)(x-3).

2. What is the LCM of 12 and 18?
A. 36
B. 54
C. 18
D. 24
Answer: A
 LCM (12,18) = 36.

3. If f(x)=3x+4 f(x) = 3x + 4, what is f(2)f(2)?
A. 10
B. 8
C. 6
D. 14
Answer: A
f(2)=3(2)+4=10f(2) = 3(2)+4 = 10.

4. The probability of an event happening is 0.2. The probability of it not happening is:
A. 0.8
B. 0.2
C. 1.2
D. 0.5
Answer: A
1−0.2=0.81 – 0.2 = 0.8.

5. Convert 0.0072 to standard form:
A. 7.2×10−37.2 \times 10^{-3}
B. 7.2×10−47.2 \times 10^{-4}

Answer: A

 Sample Essay Questions & Worked Answers

Question 1: Sets and Venn Diagrams

Let
A={2,4,5,7}A = \{2,4,5,7\}
B={1,2,3,7}B = \{1,2,3,7\}
U={1,2,3,4,5,6,7}U = \{1,2,3,4,5,6,7\}

Find:
a) A∩BA \cap B
b) B’B’ (complement of BB in UU)
c) (A∩B’)∪{6}(A \cap B’) \cup \{6\}

Solution:

a) A∩B={2,7}A \cap B = \{2,7\}
b) B’=U−B={4,5,6}B’ = U – B = \{4,5,6\}
c) A∩B’={4,5}A \cap B’ = \{4,5\},
so (A∩B’)∪{6}={4,5,6}(A \cap B’) \cup \{6\} = \{4,5,6\}.

Question 2: Geometry — Circle Theorems

In the circle below, tangent TATA and tangent TBTB from point TT meet circle at A and B. If ∠AOB=110°\angle AOB = 110°, find ∠ATB\angle ATB.

Solution Outline:

  1. Radii OAOA and OBOB are perpendicular to tangents at points of contact
    ∠OAT=∠OBT=90°\angle OAT = \angle OBT = 90°.

  2. In triangle OATOAT and OBTOBT treat O,A,B,TO, A, B, T around the circle.

  3. Using cyclic quadrilateral or tangent properties:
    ∠ATB=180°−∠AOB\angle ATB = 180° – \angle AOB
    = 180°−110°=70°180° – 110° = 70°.

Answer: ∠ATB=70°\angle ATB = 70°

Question 3: Simple Interest & Percentages

A sum of money grows to ₦1,760 in 2 years at simple interest. If the rate is 10% per annum, find the principal.

Solution:

Simple Interest SI=PRT100SI = \frac{PRT}{100}
Total amount = P+SI=1760P + SI = 1760

Interest for 2 years = P(10×2)/100=0.2PP(10×2)/100 = 0.2P

So, P+0.2P=1.2P=1760P + 0.2P = 1.2P = 1760

P=17601.2=1466.67P = \frac{1760}{1.2} = 1466.67

Answer: ₦1,466.67
